West Nile Region – Strategic Development Priorities

Geographical Overview:West Nile is a subregion located in northwestern Uganda, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. It encompasses districts such as Arua, Yumbe, Moyo, Adjumani, Koboko, Nebbi, Zombo, Maracha, Terego, Madi-Okollo, and Obongi.Arua City serves as the region's main urban center and a hub for cross-border trade and cooperation.

Key Development Priorities:

  1. Energy Access and Electrification: Historically, West Nile was not connected to Uganda's national electricity grid. Recent developments include the commissioning of a 132 kV high-voltage transmission line from Lira to Arua, integrating the region into the national grid. Additionally, the construction of the 24 MW Ituka Solar Power Station in Madi-Okollo District is underway, aiming to bolster the region's energy supply.

  2. Refugee Integration and Social Services: The region hosts a significant number of refugees from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, placing pressure on public services such as education, healthcare, water, and sanitation. There is a need for coordinated efforts to enhance integration between refugees and host communities and to strengthen local capacities.

  3. Agriculture-Led Economic Development (Agri-LED):  West Nile has adopted a strategy focusing on agriculture-driven economic growth. This includes investments in infrastructure, training, and market access to enhance productivity and establish robust agricultural value chains.

  4. Healthcare Systems and Social Services: Strengthening the healthcare system is crucial to address the needs of both the local population and refugees. This involves improving maternal and child health services, preventive care, nutrition, and ensuring access to essential healthcare services.

  5. Environmental Protection and Sustainable Resource Use: Challenges such as deforestation and environmental degradation, partly due to increased population and reliance on biomass for energy, necessitate initiatives promoting sustainable natural resource use and biodiversity conservation.

The Foundation's activities

In its activities, the foundation shall work to ensure that the purpose is met by assisting with

knowledge, technology and financing in order to - create both insights and resources to increase knowledge and the need for the system thinking that is necessary to accelerate the establishment of modern waste management according to the circular principle and through training, training and simulation,

- initiate collaborations with and between third parties to implement initiatives for the

implementation of new, sustainable and efficient waste technologies that create the conditions for the highest possible recycling of waste that is technically and economically feasible and that.
